KIROV OPERA
THE QUEEN OF SPADES
VALERY GERGIEV, GENERAL DIRECTOR AND CONDUCTOR
Also known as Pique Dame, this great Russian masterpiece made its debut at the Mariinsky Theatre in 1890. Composed by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky with a libretto by his brother Modest Tchaikovsky, the opera is based on the short story by Aleksandr Pushkin. Herman, an army officer, falls in love with Lisa, the granddaughter of the Countess. The Countess is said to know the "secret of the three cards," a winning hand at the game of Faro. Learning the secret through devious means ends up costing Herman his possessions, his lover, and ultimately his own life.
Sung in Russian with English supertitles
Kirov Opera also performs Otello (Dec. 9-16, 2007)
